Waves crashing on rocks at beach in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Beaches

The Leatherback Marine National Park is made of three specials beaches.  Playa Grande, Playa Ventanas, and Playa Carbon.  Most of the leatherback sea turtles nest on either Playa Grande and Playa Ventanas.
Playa Grande is a 5 kilometer yellow sand beach famous worldwide for it’s consistent waves.  There is something to ride everyday of the year.  Playa Ventanas, just to the north of Playa Grande, is a gorgeous beach lined with verdant trees and perfect for sunbathing and beach combing.  Playa Carbon is north of Playa Ventanas and is the black sand beach.

Secret Beaches

Playa Carbon is a black sand, volcanic rock beach that screams adventure.  There are tide pools full of tropical fish, sea slugs, sea urchins, and all kinds of marine life.  We often see large predatory birds like Osprey there as well.  The hike from beginning to end is for people in shape and lasts about 1.5 hours.

Playa Minas is a horseshoe cove lined with green hills on both sides.  There is tons of shade on the beach and very little waves.  It’s a great beach for snorkeling and the hikes on the surrounding hills offer incredibly breathtaking views.

Playa Real, or Playa Piratas is south of Playa Minas and is known for the cave in the rock outcropping that is only accessible during low tides.  It’s where the jungle meets the beach and is an absolutely amazing place to spend the afternoon.  Great for picnics and swimming.
