Black sand empty beach at Playa Carbon in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Playa Carbon

Playa Carbon is a fierce black sand beach.  It’s the northernmost beach in the Leatherback Marine National Park.  It is a mix of ashy black sand and volcanic rock.  The walk is hot and somewhat difficult but you are rewarded with pristine tide pools filled with Pacific wildlife.  There are large birds often spotted at this beach.

It’s imperative to bring sunscreen or a hat.  It gets hot.  Also best to bring shoes or sandals with a back as you’ll be climbing up and over some large volcanic boulders.  Bring water too!  Drink lots of water and stay hydrated!
