Leatherback Turtle

The Leatherback Sea Turtle is enormous. It can get up to two meters and weigh up to 1,500 pounds. They can lay up to 80 eggs in each nesting and they can nest up to 10 times a year. The nesting people is between November and March. People have described seeing this turtle nest is like seeing a dinosaur.

Olive Ridley Turtle

Olive Ridley Turtles is the most common turtle in Playa Grande and the whole Pacific Coast. It is also the smallest turtle in all of Costa Rica. During the arribadas in Ostional, a beach close to Playa Grande, there can be between 150,000-200,000 turtles arriving over the course of 3 or 4 days. Quite a sight.

Red Turtle

Red turtles are also quite common on the Pacific Coast of Guanacaste. They are slightly larger than the Olive Ridley Turtles and only lay about 3 eggs per nest. Normally you’ll find these Red Turtles on land.
